Hope Valley's Great Ridge, Peak District

Set foot above the Hope Valley you'll enjoy fabulous views from summits and all the along the ridgeline to the Kinder Plateau, Edale and Hope Valleys and either Winnats Pass or Derwent Edge.  There's plenty more to discover too, including 11th century castle (Peveril), a "shivering mountain" (Mam Tor), one of the earliet forms of access land (Ward's Piece), and a pinfold (in Hope) where stray sheep were once gathered up.

The route's highlight though is The Great Ridge - a continuous ridgeline between Lose Hill and Mam Tor.  Separating the Edale (Noe) and Hope valleys, it also runs along the boundary between Dark Peak millstone/gritstone moorland to the north, and White Peak limestone dales to the south.

Mam Tor's geology is the cause of its shivers (or landslips), which have taken place over the last 4000+ years.  A weak layer of shale lies between the gritstone and limestone areas…
